Day 3: Estella - Los Arcos

Via AYYEGUI, MONASTERIO DE IRACHE and VILLAMAYOR DE MONARDIN
Approx 21.5km

Fabulous day.

The route was quite easy with only a few manageable inclines early on. I spent the whole day with Cathy, and we spent 7 or so hours talking about our lives and reasons for undertaking this journey. I found it very therapeutic to get some things off my chest....

The weather was lovely and sunny, and then cold and windy and I was feeling glamourous with my gorgeous sunglasses tan (which was to stay with me for the rest of the journey).

The absolute highlight of the day (and one of the best memories from the entire Camino) was at Monasterio De Irache, where the local winery (or Bodgea) has installed FUENTE DEL VINO (The Wine Fountain). Ummmm, amazing!!! What a way to start a Sunday morning! We arrived there at about 9.30am and spent a bit of time there - we certainly had a tasty breakfast! Before heading (or stumbling) off on our way, we filled up our water bottles and continued to swig from them as we wandered along like a pair of old alcos! We had a stretch where we thought we were incredibly witty and profound...

We came across a lovely Spanish couple who pretended to be kangaroos when Cathy explained to them that I was Australian. We talked to them for quite some time (well, Cathy did because she can speak Spanish....I just stood there smiling like a drunken idiot). It was only when we got to the next town and started getting dirty looks from the local churchgoers that we realised we were walking down the main street of town, early on a Sunday morning with our backpacks on, drinking red wine from plastic water bottles.....Bloody Peregrinos!
